World Cup Qualifiers: Turkey vs Ukraine Predictions & Betting Tips

Free Betting Tips: Turkey to Win at 11/10 with bet365
Correct Score Predictions: Turkey to Win 1-0 at 11/2 with bet365

Turkey manager Faith Terim made some big moves after their failed Euro 2016 campaign. He left out star players such as Arda Turan and Burak Yilmaz for their games against Russia and Croatia, and they have been left out again this time round. Turan has actually been in really good form so far this season, so his exclusion from the squad has sparked rumors that he’s about to quit international football.

They were awful in France though, losing against Croatia and Spain before getting an unhelpful victory against Czech Republic in the final group game. The results weren’t necessarily to problem, it was more the distinct lack of effort and passion in the squad, with it resulting in Arda Turan being vehemently booed by his own supporters in the Spain match.

Their exclusion didn’t seem to do any harm last time out as they played out draws against Russia and Croatia. Turkey’s 1-1 draw with Croatia, along with the two other 1-1 draws in this qualifying group, leaves all six teams level on points and goal difference after round one of fixtures. A win here could prove crucial for both teams in a group which could be wide open. Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Iceland will all be battling it out for qualification to the World Cup.

Ukraine had an even worse time of things than Turkey in France over the summer. They lost all three of their group matches against Germany, Northern Ireland, and Poland. They failed to score a single goal during the tournament, highlighting once again their over reliance on winger and top scorer Andriy Yarmolenko. The winger was injured for the tournament, and that resulted in a complete absence of creativity and penetration in the final third.

This reliance was further emphasized as he got Ukraine’s only goal of the game in their 1-1 draw with Iceland in the first qualifying match, and they know that their chances of qualifying for the World Cup are very low if Yarmolenko gets injured.

Neither of these teams have looked particularly good going forward in recent times, but with the home advantage and a marginal edge in quality I fancy Turkey for this game. Odds of 11/10 for them to get the win on Thursday look good value too, so I’m backing that along with a 1-0 correct score prediction at 11/2.

Head To Head
Turkey have won four, drawn one, and lost one of their six previous meetings with Ukraine, although the last meeting was back in 2012.

Stats
Turkey have won 67% of their last nine home games, losing 0%.

Team News

Arda Turan has once again been left out of the Turkey squad, with some reports circulating that he’d ready to quit international football after being overlooked again despite his good form. Burak Yilmaz, Caner Erkin, and Selcuk Inan have all been left out again as well. This leaves captain Mehmet Topal as the most capped player in the squad, with midfielders Nuri Sahin and Hakan Calhanoglu important figures as well. Teenage sensation Emre Mor is hoping to add to his six appearances as well.

Defender Oleksandr Kucher will captain Ukraine, whilst wingers Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko are the most important players going forward for Ukraine. Roman Zozulya or Artem Kravets will battle it out for a position up front.
