N Ireland-Israel set to go ahead

Northern Ireland\’s World Cup qualifier against Israel is likely to go ahead as scheduled on Tuesday night as the freezing weather that his hit Belfast begins to ease.

FIFA delegates will assessed the Windsor Park pitch on Monday afternoon and ruled it was suitable for the visitors to train on at 5pm the same day.

Earlier, it appeared continuing snowfall could result in another postponement for Northern Ireland, whose Friday night game against Russia was rescheduled for Saturday afternoon but still fell victim to the weather.

The match referee, along with FIFA officials, will again inspect the pitch at 10.30am on Tuesday, but Northern Ireland manager Michael O\’Neill said he was confident that there would be no problems.

\”I was at the pitch this morning. It\’s not wet and it\’s not sticky,\” he said. \”In fact, it\’s nice and dry and it\’s as good as it was before the snow was on it. The groundsman has done a fantastic job.\’\’

The Irish FA said \”tireless work\” had been carried out to ensure that the playing surface would be fit to host the Israel game.

A statement said: \”The thaw has greatly helped the pitch, and it is firm underfoot. Covers will be in place tonight to protect the pitch from the frost.\’\’
