England vs Malta Predictions & Betting Tips

Gareth Southgate takes charge of England for the first time as they face Malta in the World Cup qualifiers. Our free betting predictions suggest that this might be a lower scoring game than many expect.

England vs Malta
When: 8th October, 17:00
Where: Wembley Stadium
Free Betting Tips: Under 4.5 Goals at 10/11 with bet365
Correct Score Predictions: England to Win 3-0 at 5/1 with bet365

England are in a bit of turmoil at the moment. Roy Hodgson was replaced as manager by Sam Allardyce after their dismal Euro 2016 campaign ended with their elimination at the hands of minnows Iceland.

The new manager was in charge for one game, which was a rather unconvincing 1-0 win at Slovakia in September, before being sacked due to controversy surrounding an undercover report. He has been replaced with caretaker manager and England U21 boss Gareth Southgate.

Whilst he’s not the permanent manager his squad selection is rather promising. He has selected players based on form rather than reputation, which means Andros Townsend, Michael Keane, Marcus Rashford, and Jesse Lingard all have a place in the England squad.

Whilst their record in major tournaments leaves a lot to be desired, England are formidable when it comes to qualification. They have won their last 13 qualifiers for European Championships and World Cups and haven’t lost any of their last 30, with their last defeat being a 1-0 loss in Ukraine in 2009. At home England have won ten and drawn one of their last 11.

I don’t expect that record to end on Saturday either. Malta are the perennial bottom dwellers in the qualification groups, and their World Cup qualifying campaign didn’t start any better as they lost 5-1 at home to Scotland.

This defeat made it 11 games without a win, eight of which they have lost. Away from home Malta have lost 13 of their last 15 matches, winning none and losing heavily to Denmark and Czech Republic. They have only scored three times in this period as well, so things don’t look overly promising for them.

Malta may be easily beatable away from home, but they don’t often lose massively. Only two of their last 15 away days have seen them lose by more than three goals, which means that 13 of their last 15 away games have seen fewer than five goals scored in total. England have only seen five or more goals once in the last 15 games, so backing Under 4.5 Goals at 10/11 looks very good value to me. I’m going for a 3-0 win for England at 5/1 for my correct score prediction as well.
33/1 England to beat Malta!

Head To Head
England have won all three previous meetings with Malta, scoring eight goals and conceding once.

Stats
87% of Malta’s last 15 away games have seen fewer than five goals scored, as have 93% of England’s last 15.

Team News

Burnley defender Michael Keane has been drafted in for the first time to replace the injured Glen Johnson. Andros Townsend is also in the squad after Raheem Sterling’s injury, and the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Michail Antonio have done enough to earn a position in the squad.

Veteran Valetta striker Michael Mifsud is the top scorer and main attacking threat in the Malta squad with 40 international goals. None of the other members of the team have reached five goals yet, although Alfred Efflong’s four goals in 13 appearances is a promising sign.
