Del Bosque: Spain silenced critics

Vicente Del Bosque believes Spain have dispelled any doubts about their current form with a 1-0 win away to France on Tuesday evening.

Del Bosque\’s men went top of their group in 2014 World Cup qualification courtesy of Pedro\’s 58th-minute winner. It was horror night for France, though, with Paul Pogba being sent off with 12 minutes still to play.

Spain were held to a shock draw by Finland last week, leading many to question the world and European champions\’ World Cup title hopes. Del Bosque insists this result has his side back on track.

\”People always have doubts. So this result is important,\” he told AS.

\”We showed conviction to stick to our style. We played very well. We were a bit messy when they had 10 men but everyone played very well.

\”The last few days have been uncomfortable because there was a possibility we could have gone five points behind France, but the players showed great maturity. It could have been a bigger scoreline but we have worked hard and suffered right until the end.

\”We are very happy with these three points because they put us in a great position. We got the result by playing in our own style. We should never change the way we play, because it has served us very well.

\”I am someone who does have doubts now and again and I think it would be foolish not to, so this result is extremely important for us. We affirmed our ideas and showed conviction out on the pitch.\”

Pedro, meanwhile, believes that in addition to his winning goal, he should have earned a penalty for the visitors when he was felled in the box by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

\”For me it was a penalty,\” he explained. \”I have seen it on camera. He [Lloris] touched me and I rolled.\”

On his goal, he added: \”I\’m not sure how I did it, but I managed to touch the ball in. The most important thing is we won.\”

France striker Karim Benzema, though, says his team deserved to get something out of the game.

\”We are all very disappointed,\” Benzema told TF1. \”If you look at the whole game, we did not deserve to lose. We made a mistake and we paid [for it].\”
