Cahill ruled out of San Marino clash

England will be without Gary Cahill for Friday\’s World Cup qualifier with San Marino as a result of a knee problem.

The Football Association has said Cahill \”will be reassessed later in the week\” to determine his availability for the qualifier away to Montenegro on Tuesday.

He had landed awkwardly on his knee during Chelsea\’s 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.

Cahill is the third centre-back to withdraw from Roy Hodgson\’s squad for the games, with Tottenham\’s Michael Dawson ruled out after suffering a hamstring problem and Rio Ferdinand unable to take part due to his training schedule.

Newcastle\’s Steven Taylor is the latest replacement defender to be added to the squad, following Joleon Lescott and Steven Caulker.

Taylor told his club\’s official website: \”It\’s a dream come true. I am so happy to have received a call-up to the full squad. It is every player\’s ambition to represent their country and it is the greatest honour in professional football. If I am lucky enough to be given that chance over the next seven days, it will be one of the proudest moments of my playing career.\”

And his boss Alan Pardew, who had described Taylor\’s performance in the recent win 2-1 win over Stoke City, added: \”This is a fully deserved call-up for Steven. He missed part of the season but since his return has been outstanding. He has a great chance, on this form, of going to the World Cup. On behalf of all the squad, staff and supporters, we wish him all the best and hope he is given the chance to win his first senior international cap.\”

England are currently second in Group H, two points behind Montenegro.
