Armenia vs Romania Predictions & Betting Tips

Romania look for their first win of the World Cup qualification campaign when they visit Armenia on Saturday. Our free betting predictions suggest that Armenia will struggle going forward without their star player.

Armenia vs Romania
When: 8th October, 17:00
Where: Vazgen Sargsyan anvan Hanrapetakan Marzadash
Free Betting Tips: Romania Clean Sheet: YES at 5/4 with bet365
Correct Score Predictions: Romania to Win 1-0 at 5/1 with bet365

Armenia have suffered a pretty major blow to their chances this week after Manchester United requested the withdrawal of Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the international squad due to injury. The play-maker is Armenia’s best player by far and their only real attacking threat, and considering they struggle to score even when he is playing this isn’t good news for them.

Their World Cup qualifying opener saw them lose a drab game 1-0 at Denmark, with that defeat making it 13 defeats, three draws, and two wins in their last 18 matches in all competitions.

It was this sort of record that saw them finish bottom of their Euro 2016 qualification group last time out, with them picking up just two points from their eight games. Their two victories came in thrashings over Guatemala and El Salvador, but they struggle much more in front of goal against competent opposition. They have failed to score in seven of their last nine games and in seven of their last ten at home.

This sounds good for Romania, who have long been known for their organised and sturdy defence. They managed to limit the talented France to two goals in Euro 2016 in the summer, and one of those came in the final moments as Dimitri Payet scored an unstoppable goal.

They did end up picking up just one point in their three group games, and they followed it with a somewhat disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Montenegro in the World Cup qualifying opener. They have won one, drawn nine, and lost three of their last 13 matches in all competitions.

Romania’s defence is what we’re really interested in though. They have kept nine clean sheets in their last 15 away games, and in Euro 2016 qualifying they conceded in just two of their ten games. If they can continue this excellent defensive showing they might have a chance of making it to Russia in two years time. Their group includes favourites Poland along with Denmark, Kazakhstan, Montenegro, and Armenia. Romania and Denmark are likely to be battling it out for the runners up spot.

Considering their strength at the back I don’t think Romania will have many issues keeping a Mkhitaryan-less Armenia at bay on Saturday. The hosts struggle to score even with their star player on the pitch, so odds of 5/4 for a Romania Clean Sheet look good to me. I’m backing a 1-0 correct score prediction at 5/1 as well.

Head To Head
Romania have won two and drawn one of their three meetings with Armenia, scoring six and conceding once.

Romania kept a clean sheet in 80% of their Euro 2016 qualifiers, whilst Armenia have failed to score in 67% of their last nine home games.

Team News

Star player Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been withdrawn from the squad due to injury, which makes their top scorer midfielder Marcos Pizzelli with eight goals in 51 appearances. 23 year old striker Heham Kadyman adds a hint of promise to their attack.

Defender Dragos Grigore will captain the side, whilst striker Bogdan Stancu continues to lead the line and hopes to add to his 11 international goals. Young midfield duo Razvan Marin and Dorin Rotariu hope to make their debuts on Saturday.
