Argentina vs Paraguay Predictions & Betting Tips

Argentina look to get back to winning ways in the World Cup qualifiers when they host Paraguay on Tuesday night. Our free betting predictions suggest that Argentina can keep another home clean sheet here.

Argentina vs Paraguay
When: 12th October, 00:30
Where: Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes
Free Betting Tips: Argentina to Win to Nil at 5/6 with bet365
Correct Score Predictions: Argentina to Win 2-0 at 5/1 with bet365

Argentina’s fairly poor start to World Cup qualification continued last week as they let their lead slip twice in a 2-2 draw in Peru. This pushes them down to 5th place in the table, out of the automatic qualification spots and into the lottery of an inter-continental playoff.

There is still a lot of football to be played and a small three point gap between them and the top spot, but it’s not the best of positions to be in for one of the most talented sides in the world.

The 2-2 draw in Peru followed on from a 2-2 draw in Venezuela last month to make it just one win from their last four games. One of these was the penalty defeat to Chile in their second consecutive Copa America Final. This defeat saw Lionel Messi briefly retire from international football in a heat of the moment decision, and whilst he isn’t in the squad now due to injury he will play in an Argentina shirt again.

Argentina’s form may be struggling a bit at the moment, but at home they’re doing a bit better. They have won seven of their last 11 games in Argentina, losing once and drawing three times.

Paraguay made it two defeats in a row last week when they hosted Colombia and came away empty handed thanks to a very late winner. Prior to that it was a 4-0 thrashing in Uruguay, not the best of games considering they had beaten Chile 2-1 prior to that.

This puts them 6th in the group, just one position below Argentina. They are, however, four points adrift of them. It’s a big gap to make up on a team that is very likely to start winning games again soon.

Paraguay have lost eight of their last 11 away days as well, winning just once and conceding eight in their last four trips away. They have failed to score in five of their last eight away days as well, whilst Argentina have kept a clean sheet in five of their last eight at home. This makes odds of 5/6 for Argentina to Win to Nil look very good value, so I’m backing that along with a 2-0 correct score prediction at 5/1.

Head To Head
Argentina have won four, drawn two, and lost one of their last seven meetings with Paraguay.

Stats
Argentina have kept a clean sheet in 63% of their last eight at home, whilst Paraguay have failed to score in 63% of their last eight away from home.

Team News
Captain Lionel Messi is missing through injury, but other big guns such as Sergio Aguero, Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, and Javier Mascherano are present and ready to pick up the slack. 26 year old midfielder Guido Pizarro is hoping to make his Argentina debut, whilst Dybala is searching for his first international goal after five appearances without one.

39 year old Justo Villar remains a regular between the sticks for Paraguay, although Barreto took his place last week. 36 year old defender Paulo da Silva is the most capped player in their squad with 140 games to his name. Midfielder Cristian Riveros is the top scorer with 15 goals. 22 year old Derlis Gonzalez is hoping to add to his three international goals.
