Toronto 1-4 Roma: Italians thrash TFC

Toronto FC started strongly, but ultimately AS Roma played the part of rude visitor, thrashing the home side 4-1 at BMO Field in front of 18,274 fans during a friendly match on Wednesday night.

Goals from Alessandro Florenzi, Marco Borriello and a brace from Miralem Pjanić secured the victory for Roma, and even Toronto\’s lone tally came from the head of  Nicolás Burdisso, as the player scored an own goal.

On 15 minutes, Toronto jumped into the lead through Burdisso\’s own goal. Alvaro Rey made the play by running at  Dodô before sending a cross into the area which defected off Burdisso\’s head and into the Roma goal.

Florenzi brought things level at 1-1 by scoring 10 minutes later. The Italian banged home from close ranger after his Brazilian teammate Maicon made a surging run down the right side and crossed into the area.

Borriello fired the Italians into the ascendancy in the 33rd minute. The forward rose above his opponents in the box to head home just under the crossbar.

Pjanić scored Roma\’s third with a curling free kick effort into the top left corner from the edge of the area. Due to the placement of strike, Frei had no chance to get a hand to the ball. The Bosnian doubled his tally in the 87th minute by rounding substitute goalkeeper Quillan Roberts and tapping into the empty goal.

In a first half dominated by Roma, which held 60 percent possession, it was the side to look dangerous first. In the fifth minute, Dodô forced Stefan Frei into a strong save, taking a shot from the edge of the area. The shot took a deflection before Frei parried away, adding to the difficulty of the stop.

Robert Earnshaw didn\’t miss by much in the 35th minute, firing a shot just over the crossbar.

Kyle Bekker came close in the 52nd minute, with a deflected shot that rattled off the crossbar. Moments later, Andrew Wiedeman found himself in alone on goal from a sharp angle, but fired into the side netting from close range.

Toronto is back in action on Saturday as they host the Seattle Sounders at BMO Field.
