Roma confirms Rudi Garcia as new coach

Rudi Garcia has signed a two-year contract to become the new coach of Roma.

The former Lille boss joined the Stadio Olimpico side on Wednesday following the departure of Aurelio Andreazzoli.

The 49-year-old had been widely expected to be announced as the new coach and club president James Pallotta revealed his delight after confirming Garcia’s arrival.

“We are very excited and confident that Rudi Garcia is the right coach for AS Roma,” Pallotta told the club’s official website.

“He is a proven winner with a great football mind who we believe fits in perfectly with our vision for the future.”

Garcia was personally cherry-picked by Roma sporting director Walter Sabbatini following an impressive five-year stint at Lille. The former midfielder was chosen as France’s coach of the year in 2011 after steering Lille to a league and cup double.

Club CEO Italo Zanzi feels that Garcia will provide the club with a solid basis for growth in Serie A next season.

“[Garcia] will continue to develop our existing talent base while giving us the best opportunity to win now. We are looking forward to this season more than ever,” said Zanzi.

Former coach Andreazzoli had only taken over from Zdenek Zeman in February but the Rome outfit eventually finished sixth in Serie A, 10 points off a Champions League place.

Roma held talks with former France coach Laurent Blanc earlier this month but moved for Garcia after being impressed with his man-management and communicative skills.
