Allegri to stay at Milan

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has insisted that Massimiliano Allegri will remain in charge of the club next season.

Allegri\’s position had been under intense scrutiny earlier in the season, with the club having been 12th in the table in November, and it was widely reported that they had been interested in appointing Pep Guardiola.

However, with Guardiola later committing himself to Bayern Munich and Milan now up to third in Serie A and on course for a Champions League place, it appears Allegri\’s job is safe.

\”I have daily contact with Allegri,\” Galliani told Gazzetta TV. \”I have not contacted any other coaches. He will stay.\”

Allegri led the Rossoneri to second place last season, but has been forced to contend with the challenges posed by the sales of key duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva in the summer.

Recent reports have suggested Italian champions Juventus could be interested in signing Ibrahimovic, who played for the Bianconeri from 2004 to 2006, but Galliani dismissed any suggestion that Milan could enter the bidding for the Paris Saint-Germain star.

\”We are sorry that we had to sell him, but he earns wages that are incompatible with our budget,\” he said.

He underlined the fact that the club had \”achieved a balanced budget\” through the departure of key players and stressed that \”Milan must create top players, not buy them\”, adding: \”We have embarked on a policy geared towards youngsters.\”

He felt the priority, if Milan were to add to the squad this summer, should be a defender. \”The team that wins the championship is the team that concedes the fewest goals,\” he explained.

However, there may be cause to reinforce the attack should Robinho be sold this summer. The forward expressed a desire to return to his native Brazil with Santos in January, while more recent reports have linked him with Flamengo.

\”Santos were the only team he wanted to go back to,\” Galliani said. \”He refused all other offers. He is a great player. We\’ll assess his thinking. We always look at renewals at the end of the season, because you have to be sure whether you will be playing in the Champions League.\”

Robinho, speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, had said he would be more than happy to consider a contract extension in the summer.

\”We can certainly talk about that,\” he said. \”First of all, I want to end the season in the best way and then we can talk about these things. These next few matches won\’t be my last for the Rossoneri.

\”I never asked to leave the club. It was Santos who came in for me. I spoke to my family about it, and we have decided to stay.

\”I explained to Galliani that it was a family matter and not a football one, and there\’s nothing I\’m lacking here at Milan.\”

Robinho also spoke to Il Giornale about his lack of playing time in the current campaign.

\”I\’m playing less this season for two reasons,\” he said. \”El Shaarawy has exploded on the scene and there\’s also Balotelli, Niang, Bojan and Pazzini. The second reason is that I\’ve had some injury problems. Now that I\’m back fit, the choice is up to Allegri.

\”I have a lot of respect for the coach and my team-mates but, if it was up to me, I\’d already be back on the pitch by now. It\’s not true that I only play well on the left. I can play everywhere and anywhere.\”
