Southampton vs Burnley Predictions & Betting Tips

Southampton hope to maintain their unbeaten streak when they host Premier League newcomers Burnley. We’re expecting the visitors to struggle against the Southampton back line, and our free betting predictions reflect that.

Southampton vs Burnley
When: 16th October, 16:00
Where: St. Mary’s Stadium
Free Betting Tips: Southampton to Win to Nil at 21/20 with bet365
Correct Score Predictions: Southampton to Win 2-0 at 11/2 with bet365

Southampton endured another difficult transitional period at the start of the campaign as they adjusted to life without the likes of Victor Wanyama, Sadio Mane, and manager Ronald Koeman. They failed to win any of their first four games, but since then they have started to improve.

A 3-0 win over Sparta Prague kickstarted their season in the Europa League group stages, and domestic victories against Swansea, Crystal Palace, and West Ham followed as they rediscovered their defensive form. Goalless draws against Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Leicester put a dampener on their good run, but their impressive defence has continued to thwart the opposition.

Southampton have now kept six clean sheets on the bounce in all competitions, scoring nine at the other end during this period and pushing themselves into 10th in the table despite their poor start. Claude Puel seems to have found his feet in the Premier League.

Burnley have been hotly tipped as relegation candidates since their promotion. They have failed to make many serious improvements to the squad and don’t look any better than the side that were relegated two seasons ago. They have managed a few good results, but mostly they have struggled with the pace and quality of the Premier League.

They managed an almost unbelievable win against Liverpool in game-week two as they won 2-0 despite having around 20% possession. But 3-0 defeats to Chelsea and Leicester showed that they can’t rely on those tactics, and although their 2-0 win over Watford was well deserved I think they will struggle as the season progresses.

The thing you don’t want to be short of when visiting a defensively sound Southampton side is goals, and that’s exactly where Burnley are struggling. They have failed to score in five of their eight competitive games this season, and they’re facing a Southampton side with the second best defensive record in the league and the second highest percentage of clean sheets after Spurs.

Southampton may have struggled in front of goal recently, but they will fancy themselves to get a goal or two on Sunday. Burnley have conceded in all of their away games this season and all but two of their games home and away. This, plus Southampton’s defensive record, makes odds of 21/20 for Southampton to Win to Nil look very attractive, so I’m backing that along with a 2-0 correct score prediction at 11/2.
4/1 Southampton to beat Burnley!

Head To Head
Southampton have won three, drawn two, and lost one of their last six games against Burnley.

Southampton have kept a clean sheet in 60% of their competitive games this season, including 100% of their last six. Burnley have failed to score in 63% of their matches as well, including 100% of their away days.

Team News
Cedric Soares, Jay Rodriguez, and Sofiane Boufal are all expected back in action on Sunday, but the same can’t be said of Shane Long, Ryan Bertrand, and possibly Matt Targett. New signing Jeremy Pied is out for the entirety of the season as well.

Tom Heaton is a new addition to Burnley’s injury list, with the only other absentee being Ashley Barnes after he suffered another setback. The striker is now expected back next weekend.
