Barcelona vs. Real Madrid Clasico scheduled to rival Premier League

The first Clasico of the 2016-17 campaign between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be played on Dec. 3 at 4:15 p.m. CET, La Liga president Javier Tebas has announced.

The encounter will take place during Week 14 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou with a kickoff time intended to compete directly with the Premier League in the Far East television market.

Tebas told Cadena Ser radio: “The Barcelona and Real Madrid game will be played on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. The game will not be aired in England because of the TV embargo that is placed at that time.

“We had three windows we had considered, at 1 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. We analysed those with our audiovisual team and to play at 6 p.m. is too late in Asia while to play at 1 p.m. is too early for the American market.”
Barcelona and Real Madrid will face off on December 3.

The Spanish Football League has already had a major change in kickoff times for the 2016-17 campaign.

La Liga eliminated the 10 p.m. local time kickoffs (4 p.m. ET) on Saturdays and introduced a new 1 p.m. local time on Saturday (7 a.m. ET).

“I look at other [foreign] leagues when setting the timetable,” Tebas said. “The timetable is a strategy we have been working on in recent years and the results are there. Our international sales have tripled because of that and the quality of the players we have in our league.

“We are continuously looking at ways that we can improve our product. For example, we have installed aerial cameras in seven venues and by the end of the season, we will have that in three more stadiums.”

The return game between Real and Barca, one of the most anticipated games of the season, will be played on the weekend of April 22-23 at the Bernabeu in Week 33, with only five rounds left in the campaign.

Last season, Barca pulled off an historic Clasico win over Los Blancos, defeating their rivals 4-0 at the Bernabeu stadium in Nov. 2015. Real came back to win at the Camp Nou by a score of 2-1 in April 2016.

Atletico Madrid are level on 15 points with Real at the top of the league standings after seven games. Defending champions Barcelona are fourth, two points adrift of the two sides and one behind third-placed Seville.
