Ligue 1 has come alive in the early weeks of the new season, this campaign is far from a one horse race. Champions Paris Saint Germain are struggling and they’re already four points behind shock leaders Nice. Two sides who have already beaten PSG meet on Friday night, as Monaco travel to Toulouse. Who will be able to maintain their strong start?

Monaco are second behind Nice, they’re only a point off the top. They’ve started off with six wins from eight in the league, and they’ve had some impressive results in the Champions League. The Red and Whites have been in excellent scoring form, finding the net 22 times already this season. That’s comfortably the best record in Ligue 1 so far. While they hold the best away record in France, Leonardo Jardim’s side face a very tough test on Friday night.

They travel to Toulouse, a side who have a 100% record at home this season. Their last game here was a 2-0 win over PSG, which showed how strong they are at Stadium Municipal. Les Pitchouns are fourth in the table, despite finishing 17th last term. Can they claim another huge scalp and prove they’re no flash in the pan?

While Monaco are the league’s top scorers, Toulouse are a strong attacking side themselves. They have just 11 goals, but eight of those have come in their three home games. In fact, they’ve scored two or more in seven of their last eight matches at home. They’ll be confident of adding more to that tally this weekend, especially when you contrast their styles of play.

Toulouse are an aggressive, direct side. They get the ball forward quickly and they tend to dominate it in the air. Almost half of the goals they’ve scored at home came from set pieces. Monaco aren’t a side built for defending aerial attacks. In their heavy 4-0 defeat at Nice last month, they conceded two headed goals. They’ve let in five on the road so far, and two of those have came from set pieces.

Monaco are much better at attacking set pieces, especially free kicks. Given that Toulouse concede an average of 16 fouls per game at home, the visitors should get a lot of joy here. While the two sides have strong defensive records overall, both are better going forward and they seem perfectly set up to take advantage of their opponent’s weaknesses. Also, given that they’re just coming off the international break, both sides have little time to prepare for this clash.

Given that Toulouse are averaging 2.67 goals per game at home, and Monaco have 12 in four away league games, we expect a high scoring encounter. Looking at those stats, over 2.5 goals here looks like fantastic value at 11/10 with bet365.

Head To Head
There’s been little between these two sides in recent years. In their last six meetings at Toulouse’s Stadium Municipal, 50% have ended all square. That includes their clash in August last year, which finished 1-1. Monaco have made this trip three times since 2014, they’ve scored in every one of those games and racked up five goals in total.

100% of Monaco’s last six Ligue 1 games have seen three goals or more. They are particularly high scoring on the road. In their four away games so far, half have seen over 4.5 goals. Both sides have some strong form coming into this clash, with Monaco winning six from seven in the league, and Toulouse winning seven of their last eight at home.

Team News
Toulouse have to do without Brazilian midfielder Somalia, while fellow midfielder and Mali international Tongo Doumbia is still sidelined. He’s expected to return in November.

Monaco are without rejuvenated forward Falcao for this game, while they’re also missing Benjamin Mendy and Adama Traore through injury. Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is serving the last of his three game suspension after being sent off against Nice.
