Nice vs Lyon predictions, betting tips & match preview

Can shock Ligue 1 leaders Nice continue their unbeaten start against Lyon? Our free betting tips are backing a home win for Mario Balotelli’s new side.

Nice vs Lyon
When: 14th October, 19:45
Where: Allianz Riviera
Free Betting Tips: Draw Half-Time/Nice Full-Time at 5/1 with bet365
Correct Score Predictions: Nice to Win 2-1 at 9/1 with bet365

This is easily the biggest game in France this weekend, as leaders Nice aim to protect their unbeaten record. Given how dominant Paris Saint Germain are in Ligue 1, few expected the side from the Allianz Riviera to sit top after eight games. Will Mario Balotelli and co. still be top after Friday night’s meeting with Lyon?

While Nice are shock leaders, they aren’t exactly the new Leicester. Les Aiglons finished fourth in the table last season, narrowly missing out on Champions League football. That was enough to earn manager Claude Puel a move to Southampton, and star Hatem Ben Arfa a dream transfer to PSG. They replaced Puel with former Borussia Monchengladbach boss Lucien Favre, and he’s made a great start.

Having restored Ben Arfa from Hull and Newcastle outcast to in-demand forward, Nice have taken a chance with Mario Balotelli. Despite the Italian’s free transfer from Liverpool being labelled overpriced by Jamie Carragher, he’s been an inspired signing. He’s scored five times in three appearances, and Balotelli has won every game so far with his new side.

Lyon, on the other hand, have struggled in the early weeks of the season. Last year’s runners up have already lost three times. They’ve failed to win any of their last three away games, and they’ve claimed just two wins in their last six matches. While you would have put them down as leading contenders to take advantage of any slip from PSG, they’re already seven points off top spot. Do they have any chance of closing that gap on Friday?

Nice’s home form would suggest they don’t. The Ligue 1 leaders have won nine of their last 10 at the Allianz Riviera. They’ve scored two or more goals in eight of those 10, while they’ve scored nine times in their last three at home. The possible suspension of Mario Balotelli could have dented their hopes, but his red card against Lorient was rescinded. He’s set to start, and he’ll be looking to continue his perfect start.

While everything seems to be pointing towards a home win, Nice are good value for the win on the match betting. They’re priced at 13/8 with bet365. However, we like the look of draw/Nice on the half-time/full-time market. While Lyon have struggled away from home, they’ve not yet been behind at half-time in any league away game. They’ve been level at the break in their last four games on the road. Nice have been level at half-time in 60% of their games at the Allianz Riviera. The leaders to edge it in the second 45 is priced at 5/1 with bet365. It looks like fantastic value judging by those stats.

Head To Head
Lyon have won at Nice twice in their last three visits. However, this fixture last season brought a 3-0 win for the hosts. Lyon have won 20 of the 37 meetings between them, but the tide seems to be turning. The last three meetings between these two have seen Les Aiglons take two wins and a draw.

Nice are averaging just over 2 goals per game at home, while Lyon are scoring just above one per game. The league leaders have won 75% of their games so far. Of those six league wins, all but one have came a single goal, including 75% of their home victories.

Team News
Nice’s only major absentee is defender Maxime Le Marchand, after Mario Balotelli escaped suspension. He was sent off at Lorient after scoring the winner, but his second yellow was rescinded so he’s free to play here.

Lyon are hopeful that star striker Alexandre Lacazette will be fit for this clash. However ,they’re without former Manchester United defender Rafael, forward Maxwell Cornet and Clement Grenier.
