Atletico Atletico grab advantage in dramatic tie

Atletico Madrid claimed a 2-1 victory over Sevilla in an incident-packed Copa del Rey semi-final first leg that produced three penalties and three red cards in the second half.

Two spot-kicks from Atletico striker Diego Costa either side of an Alvaro Negredo penalty gave the hosts a narrow lead heading into the reverse fixture in Sevilla next month.

Costa gave Atletico the upper hand from the penalty spot early in the second half when Sevilla\’s Emir Spahic was shown his second yellow card for handling the ball in the area.

But just eight minutes later, Atletico were also reduced to ten men when a goal-bound chip from Negredo hit Diego Godin\’s hand, with the defender given his marching orders.

Negredo buried from the spot to equalise for the visitors, but the drama continued as a third hand ball of the match – this time by Fernando Navarro – paved the way for Costa to seal the match for Atletico from the penalty spot.

Navarro received a yellow on that occasion and was sent off with just five minutes remaining after pulling down Costa after the striker threatened to break through on goal.

All three players should be available for the second leg of the tie, with a final showdown against either Real Madrid or Barcelona at stake for the winner.
