Petkovic: Lazio still on course for UCL

Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic believes the club can still claim a spot in next season\’s Champions League despite enduring a 1-1 draw with fierce cross-town rivals Roma in the Serie A.

Lazio drew first blood in the Rome derby, Hernanes scored in the 16th minute, but were forced to rue missed chances as Roma captain Francesco Totti equalised from the penalty spot.

Totti\’s ninth derby della capital goal created a slice of history, equalling the record for most goals scored in the Rome derby.

But the draw did little to advance either club\’s claims for a Champions League berth next season, Lazio now seven points behind third spot in the ladder, while Roma are a further three points adrift.

However, Petkovic remains confident his side can still secure a place in Europe\’s most prestigious club tournament, believing his side showed more than enough \’willingness\’ against Roma to push the club up the table.

\”I see the glass as half-full though,\” he told Sky Sport Italia. \”I believe that the Champions League is still possible.\”

\”In the second half we had to calm the rhythm of the game down.

\”But in the first half we had a lot of the ball, and that allowed us to dominate.

\”We have shown a willingness to win here, but unfortunately we could only get a draw.\”

However, the Roma camp felt just as aggrieved the result did not fall their way, Totti lamenting his side\’s slow start to the game.

\”We threw it away in the first half,\” he explained to Sky Sport Italia. \”Unfortunately we did not get into the game immediately and they put us under great difficulty.\”

And despite claiming the \”most beautiful record\”, Totti said the pain of not claiming the three points against the club\’s bitterest of foes would long linger.

\”I wanted (the record) so much, it is my most beautiful record,\” he said. \”But I wanted the win more.\”
