Juve punished after Genoa controversy

Juventus coach Antonio Conte and director general Giuseppe Marotta have been banned by Lega Seria A for their furious reactions to Saturday\’s controversial draw with Genoa.

Conte, 43, has been banned from the touchline for two matches after his tirade at referee Marco Guida, who failed to award a penalty for handball in injury time as the game ended 1-1.

Marotta was suspended for three weeks after questioning the selection of Guida, who is from a province of Naples – Napoli are Juve\’s nearest title challengers – to officiate the game.

In a statement on their website, Lega Serie A said: \”Antonio Conte is disqualified for two games and fined €10,000 for confronting the referee with insulting remarks at the end of the game and repeating them in the changing room shortly afterwards.

\”Giuseppe Marotta is banned from pursuing any activity with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) or representing his club until February 18 for challenging the work of the officials and addressing the referee with an intimidating attitude and insulting remarks.\’\’

At the end of the game, Conte appeared to shout: \”Shame on you\” at the referee. At his post-match press conference, the coach suggested Guida had acknowledged the foul but not awarded a penalty.

\”When I hear certain things, \’shame\’ is the least I can say,\’\’ he said. \”[Goal-line official Andrea] Romeo said it was a penalty. But Guida explained that he didn\’t feel up to awarding it.\”

Marotta added fuel to the controversy when he said the referee had made \”a serious error\”.

\”I\’m sure it wasn\’t an act of bad faith, but the referee Guida, from Torre Annunziata, was clearly in difficulty and I would question the appointment,\” he said. \”Imagine if they sent a referee from Turin to take a Napoli game.\”

Conte\’s ban means he will miss his side\’s league games against Chievo and Fiorentina.

Lega Serie A also imposed bans on Juve defenders Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini for improper conduct at the end of the game.

Bonucci was suspended for two games for confronting officials at the end of the game, while Chiellini – who was injured and not in the squad – has been banned for one match for entering the field of play without permission. He has also been fined € 5,000.

Conte and Bonucci will be available for Tueday\’s Coppa Italia semi-final against Lazio, but they also miss the league matches against Chievo and Fiorentina.

Juventus have been hit with a €50,000 fine for the overall conduct of staff and supporters. Some fans were said to have spat at the officials as they left the pitch.
